When watching anime, look out for:
Bento box (lunch in a basket)
Characters take off shoes on entering the house.
Chopsticks, sushi, cakies and dough buns, pocky {mikado in France} choco covered thin biccie sticks.
Glomping: one character jumps on another to give him/her a big hug or hang off his/her neck (like Meilin with Syaoran and Nakuru with Touya)

Face faults:
Becoming tiny or gigantic (feeling good or bad).
Crosses as eyes (tired-shocked).
Dark forehead (anger-jealousy).
Face goes chibi (emotional).
Fangs (aggressive).
Fire from eyes/fire around you/fire in hands (want to fight-rivality).
Hearts in eyes (love).
Jagged outline (stressed-shocked).
Nosebleed (bad thoughts).
Red cross on forehead/hair (stress vein=vexed).
Spiral eyes (dizzy-spinning thoughts).
Spirals around head (confused/dazed).
Stars or bubbles around the head (admiration/daydream).
Sweat drop (embarrassed-stressed).
Walking like clockwork (stressed).

Sometimes a character will pass out or collapse/fall on their face to show how surprised they are (by someone stupidity or attitude)
Wooden mallet/hammer: Jealous anime lasses "magic" out of nowhere (hammerspace?) to bop their unfaithful or stupid boyfriend on the head. These mallets often have a marking of how heavy they are (in City hunter: Kaori has one with one ton written on it)
Some girls strangle their boyfriend, drag him by the collar, or even throw him out of the window (comical situations)

Various Words and expressions:
Ai=love (also koi).
Bakemono=monster.
Chibi=super small and cute or super deformed.
Desu=it is [kawaii desu (its kawaii)].
Fuku=uniform (sailor fuku=sailor uniform like in CCSakura and Sailor moon).
Gaki=brat.
Hanami=cherry blossom festival.
Henshin=physical transformation (like usagi into sailor moon).
Hime=princess (mononoke hime=princess mononoke).
Kareshi=boy friend/Kanojo=girlfriend... (Karekano: his and her relationship).
Kawaii=cute.
Kokoro=heart.
Kowai=scary.
Mahou=magic.
Neko=cat.
SD=super deformed character (huge head tiny body big features).
Senshi=warrior.
Tenshi=angel.
Yume=dream.

Japanese expressions:
Arigatou=thank you.
Ashita=tomorrow.
Baka!=stupid!
De mo/Kedo=but
Doki doki=fast heart beat/Butterflies in stomach/Thumping (Onomatopeic like boom boom).
Dozi!=goof/shmunk/klutz!
Gambatte!=Good luck!
Gomen/Gomen nasai=sorry.
Hai=Yes/Yup!
Iie=no/nope.
Irrashaimase=welcome.
Itadakimasu=bon appetit! Enjoy the meal! Thanks for the food.
Ja ne=see ya! Later!
Kirei=pretty
Kitto=for sure!
Konbanwa=good evening.
Koi! =come here!
Konnichiwa=hello
Mata ne=see ya later.
Matte=wait!
Minna=everybody [minna-san =everyone except myself].
Moshi-moshi (moshy-moshy)=hi (on the phone).
Nani? =what? You what?
Ne? =isn't it? (kawaii ne?)
Ohayo=good morning!
Onegai=please (or douzo [do u zo]).
Oyasumi=good night/off to bed.
Sayounara=goodbye.
Sugoi=cool!
Waiiiiiii=this means something like Oooooh gorgeous!!

Series types:
Mech-anime/mecha=anime with robots or mechanical stuffs (Gundam Wing-Esclaflowne).
Kodomo-anime=kiddy anime (Hello Kitty).
Magic-girl=type of anime which has girls with powers as the heroines (Sailor Moon-Sakura).
Shoujo anime=anime directed at a girl public (Sugar snow-Sailor moon).
Shounen anime=anime directed at a boy public (Dragon Ball).

Anime stuff:
Anime music video=footage to an anime show set to music.
BBS=not Japanese abbreviation but used on many Japanese sites: Bulletin Board System.
Bi=beautiful (shounen becomes bishounen).
Bishoujo=beautiful young girl (same as above).
Bishoun=beautiful young boy (12-16) this term has come to mean attractive guy (bishie).
Bootleg=illegal copies.
Cel=One original drawing/frame used in the creation of the anime/movie.
Con/animecon/sakuracon=convention, sakuracon happens each year in seattle.
At an anime convention you can buy anime goods and watch anime movies meet the original writers/animators/designers to get their autograph, some people go dressed up as their fave character so you can get your photo taken with them or make your own costume: get photographed and enter contests. You pay a certain amount per day or for a weekend and then you can enter and do all the exposition events.
Cosplay=when people dress up as their fave anime character (costume-play).
Doujinshi=fancomic/fan created manga, sometimes ecchi or hentai, if sold can be illegal (Clamp started out as doujinshi artists).
Dubbed=script translated and recopied on to the show in your language (often not liked by fans because it changes the meaning of things to fit the mouths of the characters).
Eyecatch=used before and after adverts to open the show.
Fanart=pictures drawn by fans.
Fanfic/fanction=story written by fans (fanfiction.net).
Fandub=rarer than fansub, series dubbed by fans [Distributed until the whole series is licensed, not for sale or rent, the trader can only ask for contribution towards the price of copying and sending it to you].
Fansub=series subtitled by fans.
Jap-anime/japanimation=Japanese anime...... Koreanime = Korean anime.
Jpop=Japanese pop.
Kisekae/KISS=paper dolls of favorite characters with changeable clothes, sort of fanart.
Manga=black and white comic published as book that you read from right to left or as a series in magazines.
Manwha=is the sort-of Korean equivalent.
OAV=original anime video: extras to the show not shown on TV.
Oekaki=online doodle board to draw fanart.
Omake=bonus/extra (Kerochan no omake at the end of CCS Movie2).
OST=original sound track.
Seiyuu=actor who does a characters voice (often famous).
Shipper=fanartist who likes to depict a particular relationship between characters.
Shounen-ai/shoujo-ai=Same sex relationships: sometimes ambiguous… can be used for devotion between two friends that are girls/adoration of another boy or girl even if it isn’t homosexuality.I personally think that sometimes shounen-ai is not the right term for the situation: true friendship /adoration or devotion is in a few cases a better description.
Slash (art/fic)=homosexual pairing.
Subbed=subtitled (translated text at bottom of screen)
VCD=Video CD-Rom with a video on it in computer readable formats.

The Not at all cute side to anime to be avoided:
Fanfiction terms: lemon=18/X rated; lime=12-16 rated (The term lemon may come from a Hentai Doujinshi named Lemon Cream)
Hentai/ecchi=Hentai is X rated. Its means perversion and it usually is really twisted stuff.
My site and many others are Anti-hentai! Hen=perverted, weird, strange.
Anti hentai or hentai free means that this site is safe and none of the content is X-rated.
Ecchi is the pronunciation of 'H' in Japanese it can mean rude or lurid.
Otaku can mean obsessive fan (geek/pervert connotations) but many sites use this to mean just a fan.
Violence Watch out some anime are very violent and bloody.
Yaoi/Yuri = gay/lesbian (more adult content).
